Chūsen is a uniquely Japanese dyeing technique born in Osaka during the Meiji era.
By immersing cloth repeatedly into dye, it is possible to dye 20 to 30 pieces of cloth at once.
Because the cloth is layered like a stack, dyeing is done twice from both front and back without distinction, which creates a beautiful finish—this is a major characteristic.
The process is complex and all carried out by skilled artisans, so no two pieces are exactly the same.
The delicate blurring and soft gradation created by handwork are the greatest charm of Chūsen dyeing.
