About the materials

The woodblock print uses traditional white Japanese paper with a textured surface. It has excellent color development and durability, making it an ideal material for woodblock prints. 

The hand-carved woodblock technique paints the engraved woodblock illustration color by color on the paper, using a traditional printing method called “hand-carved woodblock printing.”

Designer of Takenakado woodblock prints, woodblock stylist.

He studied interior design at a vocational school, and after graduation, worked as a paper craftsman specializing in Japanese paper shaping, paper dyeing, and paper modeling.

Afterward, as a designer, he was active in making packaging for Japanese sweets and free paper, working at places related to paper.

Utilizing knowledge of Japanese paper and commercial design, he creates woodblock designs that sensibly blend old and new printing techniques.

Additionally, he also works as a press operator and proposes styles of woodblock prints and woodblock miscellaneous goods that fit modern tastes and interiors.

Brand “Takenakado”

Takenakado woodblock printing was founded in Kyoto in 1891, and for over 130 years, has inherited various Kyoto printing techniques from the era of multiple Japan paintings to commercial printing.

The current owner, Kiyotaka Takenaka, researches old techniques and passes them on to young people, and the fifth generation, Kenji Takenaka, established Takenakado and created new work styles, selling woodblock prints and paper stationery in the store.

The sixth generation, Yuko Harada, is popular for designs that blend tradition and modernity, and Takenakado continues to grow.

Currently, they actively work on products utilizing woodblock prints and restoration of old prints, constantly pursuing new possibilities.
