To pass on the traditional "Aizome Wood Weaving" to future generations
The Aizome wood weaving (Aizome Men) used in this shoulder bag is a traditional craft product that has been handed down for over 400 years in the Aizu region located in the western part of Fukushima Prefecture.
It is a material developed to suit the harsh cold winters and hot summers of the Aizu basin, cherished as workwear and everyday wear from ancient times. Due to its thick fabric and manufacturing process, it contains many air pockets, giving it excellent breathability, moisture absorption, and heat retention, keeping it cool in summer and warm in winter. Also, because of its thickness, it is durable and resistant to thinning even after washing.
This Aizome wood weaving is the only one in Aizu that is fully hand-dyed and woven, and has been protecting the tradition for over 120 years at the Harayama weaving workshop.
To preserve the technology and spirit of the Harayama weaving workshop, Harappa Co., Ltd., born in March 2015 as a form inheriting the same workshop, was established. It was founded by Nana Yamazoe, a designer of the apparel brand "YAMMA," which used the Aizome wood weaving from Harayama weaving workshop in Kono city, Tochigi Prefecture.
The spirit of craftsmanship that Harayama weaving workshop has carefully protected, supporting workwear and everyday wear until now, and the thought of Harappa Co., Ltd. to continue this for 500 to 600 years, is incorporated into this pouch.
Supporting "craftsmanship that cherishes use"
Nana Yamazoe, the representative of Harappa Co., Ltd., who inherited the Harayama weaving workshop, has valued the apparel brand "YAMMA" from before the inheritance and has cherished the following ideas.
Without being swayed by trends, producing in small quantities, and making clothing that is loved and worn for a long time.
"The experience of continuing to cherish one item leads to the confidence of the wearer" is the way of thinking.
Using Aizome wood weaving that can be used comfortably regardless of summer or winter, it is a material that exactly fits Nana Yamazoe’s philosophy. Also, based on this idea, YAMMA and HARAPPA both adopt a style of made-to-order production that allows customers to use the items with love.
However, as the number of orders increases, there arose the issue of having to keep customers waiting. Therefore, Nana Yamazoe proposed "a design that can be used comfortably even as you age" and "a universal design that does not go out of fashion," and continues to shape items that fit well over a long time.
One of these is this shoulder bag. While not unusual, it can be loved and used for a long time without being restricted by trends or age.
