Nanten is a plant valued since the Heian period, introduced from China, as a medicinal herb that suppresses colds. It is cherished for its bright red berries that appear from late autumn to early winter, and is regarded as a talisman with the wish to 'turn hardships into blessings.' It is also believed to have a meaning of warding off evil spirits when placed near the entrance. According to the Edo period Hyakka Jiten encyclopedia, 'planting Nanten prevents fires,' and many households plant it in unfavorable corners as a fire prevention measure to protect their homes.
