Modern Meaning of Tegugui

Tegugui | 100% Cotton | Cotton Dyeing | Butterfly Kamawanu Kamawanu

A design that incorporates the concept of a negative and positive, East and West—contrasting opposites combined into one piece.

Using the emblem of the Western temple knights as the background, it symbolizes the Japanese Heian family's "Agehacho (raised butterfly)," evoking the idea of elevating it, offering viewers a subtle beauty that compares to the depths of a journey.

As a tegugui, it is naturally used daily—not just as a headband or for style, but also as a convenient item for everyday life such as an eye mask, wrapping cloth, or lunch cloth.

The Dyeing Technique of Craftsmen Continuing from the Meiji Era

Kamawanu's tegugui is made using Japan's unique dyeing technique called "chusen" that has continued since the Meiji period. By preventing dye from penetrating and pouring the dye all at once, it can be used reversibly without a front or back side, which is a distinctive feature.

Due to the manufacturing process, subtle “playfulness” occurs in the colors and patterns, and the more you use it, the more the texture changes. Each piece has a unique expression, growing into a companion that becomes more charming over time.
