The scenery of Kiyomizudera unfolds as a “journey to the extraordinary”

The founding of Kiyomizudera is ancient, and it is one of the few temples in Kyoto with a history dating back to before the Heian capital relocation.

For a long time, this temple, which watches over the capital from Otowa Mountain, has been an “image of Kyoto” for many people, hasn't it?

It is a woodblock print that expresses a peaceful and magnificent scenery, which can also be called the spirit and landscape of the Japanese people.

The refined presence of hand-printed woodblock prints

Through the traditional woodblock printing technique of carefully layering each color one by one, it creates a tactile and warm feeling, as if the texture of the printing ink and Japanese paper is naturally present within the print.

The size is slightly larger than a postcard. Whether it’s a shrine, temple, bookplate, or ribbon, wherever it is placed, it blends naturally and subtly.

About the materials

The woodblock prints use white Japanese paper with a slightly textured surface. The paper is highly colorfast and durable, making it suitable for woodblock prints.

Traditional printing techniques called “hand-printed woodblock prints” depict woodblock-engraved illustrations colored one color at a time.

Woodblock print artist Kenji Takenaka

Kenji Takenaka, creator of Ishizaka Kojiro, is the fifth generation of the Takenaka woodblock print family. He learned the woodblock printing technique from his grandfather, Takenaka Kiyohachi, since he was a child.

He captures his subjects with bold compositions and colors, creating simple yet profound expressions with a unique worldview.

He holds exhibitions throughout Kyoto and other locations, offering not only original works but also designs using woodblock prints for businesses, proposing new ways to enjoy woodblock prints.

Some of his works are housed in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Honolulu Museum of Art, deepening exchanges through workshops and woodblock printing, and actively engaging both domestically and internationally.
